Barnes stunned his competitors with a final throw of 73' 5 1/2" and suddenly found himself in the lead, with only Timmermann standing between him and the gold medal. Barnes' throw would later be called the greatest pressure throw in American shot put history. Timmermann followed with the greatest pressure throw in Olympic history, 73' 8 3/4", to snatch the victory from Barnes' grasp.
